TSRA and NPARC sign-off on key regional Memorandum of Understanding

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council (NPARC) in Bamaga on 11 December 2017.

The MOU strengthens the collaboration between the TSRA and NPARC and formalises the ongoing working relationships until 2020. It also commits the two organisations to formally identify and coordinate joint strategic objectives, particularly to improve community health and wellbeing, planning future regional services and infrastructure development and pursuing opportunities for sustainable economic development.

The TSRA Chairperson, Mr Napau Pedro Stephen AM, said it was important for both the TSRA and NPARC to formalise its relationship, as this will enable both organisations to identify and coordinate joint strategic objectives.

“I would like to acknowledge this partnership and welcome Mayor Newman and the Councillors’ commitment to working with the TSRA. I look forward to the seeing this partnership deliver real and tangible outcomes for the communities in our region,” he said.

“The commitment of the TSRA and NPARC to this MOU is an important step for our organisations and their ability to enhance the quality of lives for Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people throughout the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area.”

NPARC Mayor, Mr Newman, said the MOU recognises the relationship between NPARC and TSRA and will provide a foundation for the development of our region.

“I look forward to working with the TSRA to plan and coordinate the implementation of the community development priorities, particularly around infrastructure and economic development,” he said.

Along with TSRA’s current agreements with TSIRC and TSC, this MOU is an important to securing the coordination of governance, economic and community development across the Torres Strait Region.
