Local carver and artist Mr Anson Dorante, known for his incredible wood-work, has facilitated his very first interactive Kulap/Gorr Making Public Program at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre supported by the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA).
The strong turnout from community members and visitors highlighted the ongoing interest and support for cultural programs that provide opportunities to connect with culture, knowledge and interact with our local artists.
TSRA Chairperson George Nona said culturally embedded activities played an important role in keeping culture practices and traditions alive.
“Kulap/Gorr is important to our culture. It is traditional dancing equipment that we use during dance and ceremonies, and it helps us carry our culture and traditions forward,” Mr Nona said.
“They are also an opportunity for our people to interact with each other, share knowledge and educate the wider community about our rich cultural heritage.
“I eso Mr Dorante for sharing his art and being part of TSRA’s Gab Titui Cultural Centre Public Programs.”
With strong cultural connections to the Meriam and Kulkagal Nations of Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait), it was an opportunity for workshop facilitator Anson Dorante to share his talents and teach the significance of the Kulap/Gorr in Torres Strait Islander culture.
Through sharing his knowledge, skills and cultural perspectives with participants, he created an engaging and meaningful experience for all.
Mr Dorante said he was honoured to have the opportunity to teach and educate community members, particularly younger generations, how to make Kulap/Gorr.
“It was a privilege to share the stage with my daughter and granddaughter and showcase our family knowledge of Kulap/Gorr to the community and yumi next generations,” Mr Dorante said.
“I look forward to future workshops to share and pass this knowledge down.”
TSRA’s Gab Titui Cultural Centre proudly supports a Public Programs schedule that celebrates and strengthens Torres Strait Islander cultural practices, providing opportunities for knowledge to be shared across generations.
