Local collaboration prioritised in new partnership

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) and local Native Title peak body Gur A Baradharaw Kod Torres Strait Sea and Land Council Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal Corporation (GBK) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaboratively work towards enhancing the social, cultural, environmental and economic prosperity of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal People living across the Torres Strait region.

The MoU will ensure TSRA and GBK services fulfill their individual functions and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes for our communities.

Representatives from TSRA and GBK met to review the agreement and commit to a framework of transparency and ongoing discussions.

TSRA Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen AM explained that the MoU will align the effectiveness of both entities in a spirit of cooperation, harmony and goodwill.

“This MoU demonstrates Torres Strait Islanders working together for a united Torres Strait voice and ultimately a stronger Zenadth Kes Nation,” Mr Stephen said.

“Under this MoU, we are able to share resources and collaborate with our local Registered Native Title Bodies Corporates (RNTBCs) and Traditional Owners to achieve joint objectives,”

GBK Chairperson Lui Ned David acknowledged the significance of the MoU as a positive way forward.

“GBK supports RNTBCs and steers community-led initiatives, governed by Traditional Owners of these lands and seas,” Mr David stated.

“We have entered into this agreement with TSRA in recognition of pasin and Ailan Kastom, and to ensure our communities see a united front from leading Torres Strait Islander organisations,

Before signing the MoU, Mr Stephen and Mr David reflected on the significance of the 1936 Torres Strait Maritime Strike led by Marou as being instrumental in the formation of the First Councillors Conference at Masig on 23 August 1937.

“This MoU between the TSRA and GBK is testament to both historic events,” Mr Stephen said.
