The high-speed fixed and mobile network upgrade, a joint initiative between the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) and Telstra, has reached a new milestone with a number of new connections and capacity upgrades now complete.
In the past two months a new 3G and 4G base station at Kubin Village has been completed, upgraded 3G capacities at Moa Island and Yam Island delivered, and ADSL infrastructure upgrades provided on Thursday Island and Horn Island (Wasaga Village).
TSRA Chairperson, Mr Napau Pedro Stephen AM, said the network upgrade was vital for the Torres Strait region as it lacked mobile coverage most people in other parts of the country took for granted.
“This partnership with Telstra is providing much needed services for our communities and we look forward to the seeing it continue as it delivers improved telecommunications outcomes for the people of Torres Strait,” he said.
“It is also an important upgrade for our business community, who will benefit from the improved connectivity.”
Telstra Area General Manager Rachel Cliffe said Telstra was proud to reach this important milestone.
“We anticipate that the project will be complete from mid-next year, providing high-speed fixed and mobile infrastructure to customers in the Torres Strait Islands,” Ms Cliffe said
“The project is designed to improve mobile voice and data coverage for residents and communities and increase network bandwidth for businesses.
“We believe the new network infrastructure will play a role in maximising education, health and economic outcomes for the community.”
