Grants open: Supporting safe communities in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area

Torres Strait Regional Authority’s (TSRA) Safe Communities Grants are now open (14 March) with grants starting from $10,000 available to support safe and connected communities.

TSRA Chairperson George Nona said the grants would go towards local activities supporting safe, accessible and quality social support services in communities across the Torres Strait region, including Bamaga and Seisia in the Northern Peninsula Area.

“This is the first time TSRA has opened its Safe Communities Grants to the public in many years,” Mr Nona said.

“We hope to receive plenty of applications with ideas, initiatives and projects to support safe homes and communities, including quality services for young people and families across the region.

“I encourage individuals, groups and organisations to bring your ideas to the table and apply now.”

Example activities include:

  • Initiatives targeting safe, healthy and progressive homes and communities.
  • Programs designed to build culturally safe, strong and healthy relationships.
  • Mental health and social, emotional and wellbeing education, awareness and information workshops/programs particularly for youth/young people, people with a disability and the LGBTIQ+ community.
  • Community-based activities and projects designed and led by youth and young people to strengthen culture, identity and wellbeing.
  • Online education products and services.
  • Appropriate research targeting local and regional data gaps, with a view to empowering and building strong and resilient communities.
  • Place-based approaches that directly support improving outcomes under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.

TSRA’s Safe Communities Program aims to support safe, healthy, respectful, and progressive communities, based on cultural, Ailan Kastom and Aboriginal traditions.
