Gab Titui Cultural Centre to feature at 2019 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair

Gab Titui Cultural Centre to feature at 2019 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair

The Gab Titui Cultural Centre is taking Torres Strait culture and authentic art to the 2019 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair as one of over 40 stalls at the highly-anticipated Art Market.

Running from the 12 to 14 July attendees will also see amazing art displays from Erub Arts, Badu Art Centre and Moa Arts.

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Chairperson, Mr Napau Pedro Stephen AM, said that the collection of three Torres Strait art centres participating in this year’s Fair will instil a great deal of pride amongst Torres Strait communities.

“The Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area regions will be well represented this year and provide a strong turn out to showcase our Indigenous artists,” Mr Stephen said.

Now in its 10th year, the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair continues to grow and attract thousands of visitors from across Australia and overseas.

The TSRA have also provided funding support for two female Torres Strait artists to travel alongside the Gab Titui Cultural Centre team and experience the Art Fair; Helen Mabo and Helen Dick.

Both will be first-time attendees who will reap the benefits of promoting themselves and their work in a thriving art hub.

“While Helen Mabo and Helen Dick experience the many facets of the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, the Gab Titui Cultural Centre’s stall will aim to share information, promote artists and sell Torres Strait art, craft and collectables,” Mr Stephen said.

“I wish Helen Mabo and Helen Dick all the best with their first appearance at the Art Fair.”

Making its debut at Cairns Art Gallery during the Art Fair is the Black Bamboo: Contemporary Bamboo Furniture Design from Mer.

This collaborative exhibition is co-presented by the Cairns Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Victoria and Gab Titui Cultural Centre.

The Gab Titui Cultural Centre team will be attending the exhibition’s opening night and scheduled curators’ talk alongside Meriam artists Robert Meddy Kaigey and Sabu Tabo; two of the talented artists that helped create the works displayed in the exhibition.

“We encourage Torres Strait families in Cairns to visit and support the Gab Titui Cultural Centre and the Torres Strait and Aboriginal performances, artist talks, exhibitions and workshops during the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair,” Mr Stephen said.
