Funding support to Torres Strait Regional Community Minor Infrastructure Projects

Community Minor Infrastructure Projects - Playground

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) has recently approved of $681,000 this year in funding to support the delivery and upgrade of nine regional Infrastructure projects under the Safe Communities Programme, Community Minor Infrastructure Fund (CMIF).

The CMIF was introduced by the TSRA Board as a new infrastructure funding stream in 2015, and aims to work with the relevant Councils to improve Community amenities and safety.

TSRA Chairperson, Mr Napau Pedro Stephen AM said TSRA’s funding is a co-contribution that matches the funding by the three Local Government Councils in the region – Torres Shire Council, Torres Strait Island Regional Council and the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council.

“The funding will go towards improving amenities such as a storm water upgrade, dog pound upgrade and recycling programmes on Thursday Island and the construction of public toilets on Horn Island,” he said.

“There is requirement that the funding contribution provided by the TSRA is matched by 50 per cent from the relevant Councils.

“We will continue to work with the Councils on these projects.”

By making this funding more accessible to the three Councils in the Torres Strait, the TSRA CMIF, has been able to support the construction or upgrades of infrastructures such as:

Torres Strait Island Regional Council

  • Saibai Council Admin Building re-roof
  • Badu Airport Terminal Re-roof

Torres Strait Council

  • New Public Toilets at Horn Island (Airport Rd)
  • Water Main Upgrade Thursday Island
  • Solar lighting – Thursday Island (Seriat St and Hasting St), Muralag and Horn Island
  • Dog pound upgrade Thursday Island
  • Storm Water upgrades – Roads and Drainage Thursday Island (Blackhall St and Pilot St)

Northern Peninsula Area Region Council

  • NPA Public Facility Rehabilitation (various locations)
  • Bamaga Heritage Centre Toilets (Airport Rd)

This funding is in addition to the $886,095 TSRA funding that was allocated to 10 projects in 2016.

The 2016 CMIF funding is supporting the construction or upgrades of infrastructures such as:

Torres Strait Island Regional Council

  • Kubin and St Pauls Water Shed Repairs
  • Saibai Water Reservoir Tank Replacement
  • Saibai Lagoon Pumps Switchboard Replacement and Upgrade
  • Erub Lagoon Fence Repairs

Torres Strait Council

  • TI Swimming Pool Shade & Facilities Cover
  • TI Victoria Parade Stormwater Drainage Upgrade
  • TI Public Toilet Replacement – Hastings Street

The TSRA will continue to work closely with the Councils to progress current and future CMIF proposals.
