On Thursday, 21 November 2024, the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) hosted a special farewell reception at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre on Thursday Island to honour the outgoing TSRA Board Members and Chairperson, Mr Napau Pedro Stephen AM. The event celebrated their remarkable contributions to advancing the economic development, cultural heritage, and well-being of the Torres Strait region.

“Tonight, is a very special occasion. It is an honour to be here, and I share this honour with my fellow Councillors and CEO in presenting the Key to the City to Mr. Napau Pedro Stephen,” she said.
In further recognition of Mr Stephen’s lifelong commitment to nurturing leadership within Torres Strait and Aboriginal communities, the Torres Shire Council announced the establishment of the Napau Pedro Stephen Leadership Scholarship. This initiative reflects Mr Stephen’s belief in the importance of empowering young leaders to shape a vibrant future for the region.
In his farewell remarks, Mr Stephen said “as I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the trust and support of our communities. The strength of our people and our enduring culture will always guide our path forward.”
“To the next generation of leaders, I encourage you to hold fast to your faith in times of doubt and darkness. It is in these moments that we find our greatest strength. Together, we can continue building a future that honours yumi people,” he said.
The farewell reception also marked the conclusion of the TSRA Board’s four-year term. TSRA acknowledges the Board Members’ dedication to driving meaningful change, empowering communities, and fostering sustainable economic growth. Their collective efforts have been vital in preserving the region’s rich cultural identity and ensuring its resilience.
