Building the case for a Cultural Keeping Place in the Torres Strait

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) is calling for experts and organisations to submit an expression of interest (EoI) for the development of a feasibility study into a Cultural Keeping Place in the Torres Strait.

TSRA has long been working with Torres Strait Islander communities on the repatriation of cultural artefacts – including those removed through colonisation or unethical practices for museums, private collections or overseas institutions – to the Torres Strait.

This year we’re acting on recommendations by calling for EoIs as a first step towards creating a safe and dedicated, climate-controlled space for the ongoing care, storage and maintenance of precious returned artefacts.

Along with carefully holding the region’s valuable cultural material, a cultural keeping place could also serve as a new major attraction for the Torres Strait with First Nations-led economic, tourism, employment, research and cultural opportunities.

The initiative aligns with TSRA’s vision, Yumi pasin – yumi Ailan Kastom. Strong in culture unified partnerships to achieve a sustainable future.

If you have the skills, expertise and values to join us on this important journey, please visit www.tsra.gov.au/tenders for more information.

Submissions close 4pm (AEST) 19 February 2025.
