Torres Strait Regional Authority’s (TSRA) Gab Titui Cultural Centre has called for artworks from First Nations artists across the Torres Strait region – including Bamaga and Seisia – to showcase at two of Australia’s major Indigenous art events in Cairns and Darwin.
TSRA Chairperson George Nona said all local First Nations artists were encouraged to submit their works, especially if unable to attend the events.
“Your art represents the region, yumi culture and yumi stories,” Mr Nona said.
“It is important our works are showcased at national events to highlight the unique talent and style across Zenadth Kes.
“Art fairs are an opportunity for our artists to build careers, earn national and international recognition, and generate income from their works.”
The Gab Titui Cultural Centre attends Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) and Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF) on behalf of artists who are unable to attend, but wish to share their works on national and international stages.
Mr Nona said the Gab Titui Cultural Centre would participate at both art fairs, sharing traditional and contemporary pieces and diverse collections from the region, including works by emerging and established First Nations artists.
“These strategic relationships have helped local First Nations artists to explore opportunities beyond the region with some taking the next step by going overseas to exhibit, perform and learn,” he said.
“Art fairs provide artists with exposure and sales opportunities with interest from international and national collectors, gallery officials and enthusiasts alike.”
The 2026 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) will take place from 9-12 July celebrating its Reclamation & Regeneration theme by calling for artists to present works that share their truth, ideas and vision within safe surrounds and with unfettered passion.
The Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF) has claimed 6-9 August for its 20th anniversary, building on last year’s record-breaking event which welcomed more than 28,000 visitors and generated $5.1 million in sales for First Nations artists and art centres from across Australia.
TSRA has also invested and partnered with CIAF for several years, including sponsoring the CIAF People’s Choice Award.
Artwork submissions for CIAF and DAAF are now open. Gab Titui Cultural Centre staff are available to assist artists in preparing and delivering their works to the Centre. All artworks must arrive at Gab Titui no later than 1 June 2026 to meet shipping deadlines.
