Shipments of seafood recommence from the Erub freezer

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) is proud to announce that the Erub Fisheries Management Association (EFMA) team has recently produced a shipment of local seafood.

Only one month after reopening, under the leadership of the newly skilled local staff, the Erub freezer has shipped more than 700kg of seafood from the Torres Strait to a southern wholesaler.

TSRA Chairperson, Mr Napau Pedro Stephen AM, said this first shipment from the Erub freezer was an important outcome for the region. The shipment included coral trout, mackerel, barramundi cod, and Tropical Rock Lobster.

“The TSRA is proud of the results the EFMA Management team are already producing, especially in the current economic climate,” Mr Stephen said.

“This is all a part of the Torres Strait Regional Authority’s Warpil – Fishing for Our Future initiative and through working in collaboration with our government and non-government partners.

“The Warpil initiative is a real opportunity to remove, or reduce, identified barriers to Islanders’ entry and ongoing participation in commercial fishing and create generational change.

“The TSRA and its partners will continue to provide intensive support to the Erub Fisheries Management Association over the coming months toward the sustainability of this fishing enterprise helps reduce unemployment."
