Torres Strait Health Framework Agreement Dinner

Thursday Island

25 July 2006

  • Ministers Abbott, Abetz and Robertson
  • Members of the Partnership
  • Traditional Kaurareg Land Owner Representatives
  • Colleagues and friends.

I am pleased to welcome you all to the Torres Strait and to our celebratory dinner tonight, to mark the signing of today’s Health Framework Agreement between our Partners.

Ministers Abbott and Robertson, from your travels today to Saibai and Mabuiag Islands, I am sure you have gained a better understanding of the health challenges our communities face.

Their geographical locations and remoteness have presented a number of obstacles, however, today we have all committed ourselves to tackle the disadvantages and work together to provide solutions for the betterment of Torres Strait Islander health.

With this whole of government approach to address current Indigenous health issues in our region, I am confident that through working together in partnership, we will over the mid to long-term, see significant positive results in-terms of the wellbeing of our people.

May I take this opportunity to esso you all for travelling up to our tropical islands, and showing your support for better Torres Strait Health outcomes.

Please enjoy the delicious selection of dishes on offer this evening and I’m told you will also get a taste of Torres Strait culture tonight, with dancers providing entertainment – which you can also participate in! Esso.
