Thursday Island High School Fashion Parade

18 September 2006

Good evening everyone, and thank you for inviting me here tonight to be a part of the 2006 Thursday Island High School’s Fashion Parade. May I begin firstly by acknowledging:

  • The traditional owners of this land, the Kaurareg people
  • Elders
  • Ladies and Gentlemen
  • Students

I am very pleased to see you all here, particularly the students and youth, who are ready to put on a colourful show for us this evening.

Your enthusiasm to take part in this year’s activities for the 2006 Cultural Festival, should be commended.

These next few days make up a week where by the Torres Strait gathers to celebrate what is unique only to our region – that is our identity as Torres Strait Islanders and our rich and proud culture.

It is you the youth, who will continue this celebration in years to come, which is why I am pleased to see you here tonight and taking part in activities, showcasing your individual talents and culture.

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) endeavours to promote and preserve our culture. We believe our stories, songs, art and dance must be maintained for the younger generations, such as your-selves, to learn and draw inspiration from.

It is our Ailan Kastom and traditions that make the Torres Strait a unique part of Indigenous Australia, and the TSRA is a supporter of individuals and organisations who strive to promote and maintain the region’s culture.

Our children’s keen interest to participate in such activities is not only contributing to the revitalisation of our culture, but also assisting to improve their self confidence and communication skills.

They are learning to express themselves and their heritage in the modern world and as parents, we should be proud.

May I take this opportunity to acknowledge the teachers, students, parents and fashion designers who have assisted in producing tonight’s fashion and show – I congratulate you on your hard work.

Tonight’s theme is Apau-malu, involving our sea and what lies beneath it, so ladies and gentlemen, with out further a-due, I invite you tonight to enjoy this ocean inspired show.

Thank you.
