TSRA Office Holders Announced at First Board Meeting for 2008

At its first meeting today following the recent Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) and Queensland Local Government elections, the new TSRA Board has elected its Office Bearers.

Under the supervision of the Australian Electoral Commission, the TSRA Board has elected:

• Mr. John (Toshie) Kris (TSRA Member for St Pauls) as TSRA Chairperson;
• Ms. Napcia Bin Tahal (TSRA Member for Horn/Prince of Wales) as TSRA Deputy Chairperson, and
• Mr Kenny Bedford (TSRA Member for Erub) as Alternate Deputy Chairperson.


The candidates for the positions were:

Chairperson: Mr. John (Toshie) Kris, Mr. Phillip Mills.

Deputy Chairperson: Ms. Napcia Bin Tahal, Mr. Walter Mackie, Mr. John Abednego.

Alternate Deputy Chairperson: Mr. Kenny Bedford, Mr. David Bosun.

The Board will decide later today whether to appoint an Executive consisting of Portfolio Members who will have responsibility for the various TSRA portfolios. Should the Board decide to appoint an Executive, Portfolio Members will be nominated today.

Mr Kris, who will now serve his second term as TSRA Chairperson, has thanked the Board for re-electing him to the position.

“I would like to thank the Board for their support and confidence in me to lead the TSRA Board over the next four years,” said Mr Kris.

“As the Chairperson of the TSRA, I look forward towards working with my fellow Board Members, communities and all tiers of government, to build on the achievements of past TSRA Boards and secure a strong economic future for the Torres Strait,” Mr Kris said.

Newly elected TSRA Deputy Chairperson, Ms Napcia Bin Tahal, thanked the Board for their confidence and the trust given to her in these elections.

“I look forward to working in co-operation with the Chairperson, Alternate Deputy Chairperson and the full Board in progressing the aspirations of the people of the Torres Strait over the next four years”, said Ms Bin Tahal.

The new Alternate Deputy Chairperson, Mr. Kenny Bedford, said that he was grateful for the confidence shown in him by the Erub Community, the Torres Strait Island Regional Council and now the Board Members of the TSRA.

“I am impressed by the level of commitment shown by the Members of the TSRA Board”, Mr. Bedford.
