TSRA to host Community Business Forum at St Pauls

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) will today launch a pilot Community Business Forum at St Pauls, Moa Island with the objective of generating discussion and identifying opportunities for community business development.

Designed to build the capacity for communities to become economically independent, the three-day forum will draw on the expertise of a syndicate of Government departments and organisations including the TSRA’s Economic Development Unit, the Queensland Government Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry (DTRDI), Far North Queensland Area Consultative Committee (FNQ ACC),) as well as local guest speakers.

A series of free workshops will be held covering the following topics:

• What is Business?
• Business Ideas for your Community
• Identifying Business Opportunities
• Starting a Small Business
• Preparing a Business Plan
• TSRA Small Business Development Framework

Attendees will benefit from speakers with specialised business knowledge and gain information on where they may seek further advice and assistance that may increase their future capacity to operate successful businesses.

In addition, the forum will assist communities to identify business opportunities that may be unique to each community depending on such factors as culture, population, individual landscapes and environment.

TSRA is committed to assisting communities and individuals identify and create successful business opportunities to strengthen the economic base of the entire Torres Strait region.

The Community Business Forum will be held at St Paul’s Community Hall on 4-6 March 2008 from 9.00am to 5.00pm each day. TSRA welcomes all interested community members to participate.
