Introduction
Torres Strait research has historically been commissioned by the Island Coordinating Council (ICC) and the TSRA through the work of PhD students and the activities of the Torres Strait Scientific Advisory Committee (TSSAC) which is a part of the PZJA management structure. The TSSAC aligned with the now defunct Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) Reef Research Centre to form the CRC Torres Strait.
This arrangement was replaced by the Australian Government's Marine and Tropical Sciences Research Facility (MTSRF) program, which ran for four years from 2006. In 2010, the Commonwealth launched the National Environmental Research Program (NERP) Tropical Ecosystems Hub, which is funding several large research projects in Torres Strait until December 2014.
Current Research Projects
Programs of the Land and Sea Management Unit are underpinned by a number of joint partnership research projects. The LSMU plays a major role in coordinating the various land and sea related scientific research projects in the Torres Strait, including the NERP programs.
