The two story modern building is adorned with three feature sails and bears an iconic resemblance to the old pearl luggers of the 1960s, an era of modern Torres Strait history that transformed and shaped today’s society.

For many years, Torres Strait Islanders wanted a place in their homeland where objects of cultural significance, contemporary art and culture could be displayed and protected for future generations.

This aspiration is part of a community cultural revival movement in the Torres Strait that broadly aims to promote and maintain both traditional ‘Ailan Kastom’ and contemporary indigenous art.

The Gab Titui Cultural Centre is part of a regional framework that links community cultural centres together creating a series of steppingstones that highlight the Torres Strait’s unique cultural heritage.

The Centre takes visitors on a journey through time from the past to the present and into the future showing culture through artefacts, artwork, song, dance and stories.
