The interpretive displays in Gab Titui reflect themes and objects of cultural significance to the Torres Strait people and include:

  • The Dhoeri or Dhari
    Significant changes over the centuries have changed the material culture, but one item has remained in use throughout the Islands – the headdress, known as dhoeri or dari.
  • Mapping the Seabeds
    the geography, ecology and marine systems are explored in this component.  The Torres Strait is the most ecologically complex area of the world’s most extensive continental shelves, the Sahul Shelf.  It contains volcanic, continental, coral, alluvial islands, and fringing, platform and barrier reefs.  The Strait has a multitude of habitats and marine fauna.
  • The Universe of Tagai
    Art, science and religion in the Torres Strait.  People navigate by way of the stars and sky.  This component explores Islander’s astronomical knowledge showing the changing patterns in the sky;
  • Migration
    For many years Islanders have left the Strait in search of adventure, employment, education and a better life.  This component explores the connection to large Islander communities that have developed on mainland Australia; and
  • Islands
    Specifically examines the notion of sea and seasonal change to the Islands.  Explores how the sea is used as highways to sail on or as a barrier against outsiders.
